- Food coloring or paste gel. These coloring materials are readily available in the market and come in different colors and shades to choose from. If using these products, start in very little amounts for these are highly concentrated. You may use a toothpick in adding the food color. Add a little amount if you wish to have a brighter icing color.
Liquid food color. Red, yellow, green, and blue are the usual food colors available in the market. You may mix these colors to achieve the shade that you want. Additives are often found in these food colors. If you are conscious about its effect on health, you may avoid using these, and opt to use natural food colors. - Powdered sugar icing. Sift powdered sugar using a fine-mesh sieve to have 3 cups sifted powdered sugar. Add 3-5 tablespoons of milk for the consistency of icing piping.
Royal icing. Combine ½ teaspoon vanilla, ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar, 1 and ¾ cups powdered sugar and 4 and ½ teaspoons meringue powder in a large bowl. Stir well. Using an electric mixer beat high within 7 to 10 minutes until the mixture is stiff.
